Mr. Gourisankar Ghosh
Executive Director, Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council, WHO, Switzerland
Before joining as the Executive Director of Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council, Geneva in January, 2001, Gourisankar Ghosh was the Chief of Water Environment and Sanitation cluster in UNICEF, New York for nearly a decade. He was the architect of the current UNICEF water policy .He was also the chair of the UN committee on water through 1998-2000 and developed the concept of the World Water Development Report. He was one of the two key note speakers on the theme of water and sanitation in the World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg in August, 2002. He is a member of the UN Task force on water and sanitation for the Millennium Development Goals. He is the founder of the WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene for All) campaign now launched in 35 countries around the globe.
A former member of the Indian Administrative Service, Mr. Ghosh is a Geologist and Development Economist by academic training. He was the founder director of the Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission, Government of India 1986-1991.
Mr. Ghosh is a Life Fellow of International Water Academy, Oslo ; Indian Institute of Hydrology, Roorke and Indian Earth Science Academy . He has several papers and co authored a book on Indian Rural Water Supply.
