Varaprasad Reddy,
Managing Director, Shantha Biotechnics Private Limited

In 1992, Mr. Reddy promoted Shantha Biotechnics Private Limited with an objective of developing recombinant based therapeutic proteins for human health care. The company's mission is to produce cost effective drugs to reach the common man at an affordable price while maintaining International quality standards.

Shantha's successful development of recombinant products has created a technology platform and this has motivated scientists in India to try out other life saving drugs for development and production in the country without having to depend on imports. Hepatitis-B vaccine - SHANVAC-B and Interferon Alpha-2b - SHANFERON, developed by Shantha Biotechnics, have won the prestigious National Technology Award for successful commercialization of drugs.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from Sri Venkateswara University in 1967 Mr. Reddy obtained an engineering degree in Electronics & Communication from Andhra University. He also holds a Diploma in Computer Sciences from Biblingen University, West Germany and an MBA from Osmania University.

Mr. Reddy has won innumerous prestigious awards including Ernst & Young's 'Entrepreneur of the Year' Award for healthcare and life sciences in 2000 and National Citizen's Overseas Award also in 2000.

Mr. Reddy is interested in Telugu literature and Karnatic Music. He is married to Vasantha and has two married daughters Sangeetha and Sravanthi.
