11th Anniversary of the Wharton African Business Forum

November 15, 2003


The aim of the 2003 Wharton Africa Business Forum (WABF) was to stimulate discussion on economic growth in Africa. Panel discussions, industry speaks and workships all centering around the conference theme: Re-inventing business in Africa: from entrepreneurship to corporations, focused on supporting proactive initiatives that enhance the economic development of emerging markets in Africa. The Business Plan Competition-the only Africa-focused business competition at any US business school, built on the success of the 2002 version, attracting even more high quality business plans focussing on activities on the African continent.

This panel is designed to explore current developments in the Healthcare sector in Africa.  Entrepreneurs will discuss the existing business models, opportunities and challenges the sector is currently experiencing, as well as recent global efforts to support generic drug manufacturing in under-developed countries to enable affordable drugs.  Healthcare experts will also discuss global efforts aimed at combating major diseases facing Africa today and the role of regulatory bodies in protecting intellectual property rights and entrepreneurs.

Workshop: From Idea to Profits: A guide to Building the African Venture

The goal of this workshop is to provide aspiring and early stage African entrepreneurs with the basics of developing a viable business plan and strategy. The workshop will focus on the key aspects of a winning business plan tailored specifically for the African Venture, provide tips on common entrepreneurial pitfalls, and profit maximization strategies. An early stage entrepreneur will collaborate with the instructor to give practical illustrations.
