Edward M. Casal

Edward M. Casal is Chief Investment Officer of the Aviva Real Estate Multi-Manager business. As such, Ed has overall responsibility for ensuring there is a consistency of approach across the team and for ensuring that macro economic issues that affect the portfolios, sourcing and portfolio construction are reflected. In aggregate, Aviva manages over $5 billion in capital invested with third-party real estate fund managers as part of a real estate business with over $60 billion in assets under management. Ed is also Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Madison Harbor Balanced Strategies, Inc. Real Estate multi-manager fund registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Mr. Casal has over 26 years of experience in real estate capital markets and international corporate finance. He joined Aviva in 2008, when the operating team of Madison Harbor Capital was integrated into Aviva Capital Management. Ed co-founded Madison Harbor Capital, LLC, a real estate multi-manager firm, in 2004. Madison Harbor was an industry pioneer, creating the first SEC registered real estate fund of funds, and implementing a highly-respected investment process.
Prior to founding the Madison Harbor in 2003, Mr. Casal spent 18 years advising public and private real estate clients and their boards with regard to transactions with an aggregate value in excess of $20 billion. Beginning at Dillon, Read & Co. Inc. Mr. Casal advised domestic and international clients with regard to a wide range of real estate investment opportunities including joint venture assignments on behalf of institutional investors, restructuring of lease transactions, property sales and acquisitions. From 1992 until the merger with UBS in 1997, he directed all of Dillon Read’s real estate advisory, financing and agency activity. From 1997 to 2002 Mr. Casal served as Executive Director of the UBS global real estate investment banking team primarily responsible for new business origination and led all of the firm's real estate strategic advisory and M&A assignments in North America. Mr. Casal began his Wall Street career in 1979 at Goldman, Sachs & Co. where he served in the municipal finance, equity research and real estate departments and his principal investing career in 1982 with Alan Patricoff Associates, a venture capital firm. Mr. Casal is a graduate of Tulane University,
where he received the Wall Street Journal award for excellence in
Finance, and has an MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute, the International Council of Shopping Centers and the Pension Real Estate Association.
